Tome Lee is determined to help people suffering from multiple sclerosis (MS) (硬化症). Sometimes he 1 a 300-mile bike ride in two days to prove it.
“It’s a terrible disease,” Lee, 72, said, “ I’ve met a lot of people with MS in the last 19 years. I’ve been 2 by their strength of character. They’re a very 3 group of people.” That courage inspired Lee to find his own. Although he enjoyed biking as a child 4 up in Ireland, he didn’t start riding long 5 until he worked for Westinghouse in Minnesota. It was 1991 when he did his first 150 miles in two days. He’s been pedaling(骑自行车) ever since.
This weekend, Lee will ride from Miami to Key Largo during a biking event called the Maroon MS 150 Bike 6 . In September, he will ride from Kerry to Derry in Ireland where he will 7 300 miles in two days. Between the two events, he plans to 8 thousands of dollars. He sends letters to 100 people to collect the money, and most of the money he’s collected has 9 to the National Multiple Sclerosis Society. Lee enjoys 10 himself to achieve more. In 1992, he 11 to ride from Boca, Raton to Jacksonville and back. He did the ride for nine years. “I collected more than I 12 did.” he said.
Here’s Lee’s key to a successful ride: drink water, eat every hour, ride 13 and never think about how far you’re riding. It’s not keeping 14 that helps Lee finish a bike ride, although he rides his bike 50 to 60 miles every week. He said, “I just have a lot of stamina (耐力),which is very 15 for long races, and I’m strong –willed.”
