Many years ago, I visited a friend who worked in a nursing home.  1    my friend had mentioned to her colleagues that I knew how to play the piano. So upon my arrival , the staff  2    me to play something for the elderly people there. I was a bit  3    and totally unprepared. But finally I  4    to play a couple of songs for them.

The TV in the room was on. As I took a seat, they hardly seemed to  5     my presence. They were completely focused on that TV. At first I felt a bit hesitant to play ,   6     I would interrupt their television viewing. But after the staff encouraged me, I started to play. Wow! I couldn’t believe the  7     I got! It was like a light switch had been turned on and everyone came to life.

At first , I was a bit  8     that they wouldn’t like my selection of songs, since I really had not  9     anything for this performance. At that particular time, the  10   songs I could remember were only from the 1980s. I didn’t know if they would even    11  the music I was playing. But I soon  12    it really didn’t matter what I played . They seemed to truly  13    everything. Most of the seniors reached out to shake my hand as I finished . Many of them spoke languages I was not  14    with, but it was obvious that they were trying to communicate their  15    and appreciation.
