As we all know， it is often a big challenge to keep balance between economic progress and the protection of heritage sites. In the 1950s， the Egyptian government wanted to build a new dam to solve some issues， such as controlling floods and producing electricity. But the proposal led to protests. Water from the dam would likely damage a number of temples and destroy cultural relics that were an important part of Egypt’s cultural heritage. After listening to the opinions of scientists and nearby citizens， the government turned to the United Nations for help.
A committee， which was established to limit damage to the Egyptian buildings and prevent them from disappearing， asked for contributions from different departments and raised funds within the global community. To avoid the loss of those cultural relics， they investigated the issue carefully and conducted several tests. Finally， they decided to take them apart and rebuild them in a safe place. The attempt finally succeeded. This example not only shows the importance of working together but also tells it is worthwhile to preserve cultural relics.
