【What 】The passage comes from Reading of Book 2 Unit 2, a practical writing which guides an exercise beginner. Centered around the theme of the whole unit “Be sporty, be healthy”, the discourse gives instructions from four aspects: knowing the benefits of exercise, planning exercise routine, eating and drinking right as well as avoidinginjury.
【Why】By offering relevant suggestions to exercise beginners, this discourse is aimed at helping students realize the importance of exercising, drawing students’ attention to proper ways of it and boosting students’ interest in working out. Motivated by the guide, students will take an active part in exercising and achieve both physical and mental health. By doing so, nationwide fitness will be fulfilled, which echoes with China’s Core Socialist Values.
【How】Themed on the topic of “a beginner’s guide to exercise”, the practical
article is divided into four sections. Respective subheadings of the four sections make it easy for students to get the main idea. The rhetorical question in the first paragraph introduces the topic of the passage; Paragraph Two states the physical and mental benefits of exercise; specific instructions about exercising are given in Paragraphs Three, Four and Five, referring to making exercise routine, eating and drinking properly and avoiding injury; the last paragraph appeals to readers to act soon. As a guide, the passage adopts flexible strategies, such as subtitles, pictures and analogy, all of which make it more vivid and persuasive.
Analysis of the students’ learning situation
Having acquired some knowledge related to sports and health in the previous learning of this unit, students are well prepared for this period. One of their necessities now is guidance on reading beyond the discourse.
Students’ self-reflection is also what needs to be emphasized. So in this class, they are expected to think more about their own lifestyle. By relating the text to their daily life, students are motivated to reflect on their exercising habits so as to make personalized exercise plans.
English teaching always contributes to strengthening students’ learning ability and optimizing their emotional attitude and thinking quality. Senior One English teaching should not be an exception.
