Jason Sturm says he cannot remember what it was like to have two legs. For nearly 20 years now, Sturm has used a prosthesis (义肢). Stuim’s injury happened in March of2002 when he was taking part in a military training exercise at Fort Drum. A bomb missed its target and exploded only two meters behind Sturm. Sturm survived, but lost his left leg forever.
Ten months after the accident, Sturm tried on his first prosthesis. Though physical treatments helped him return to basic everyday activities, he gained more than 20 kilograms. He was out of shape and overweight. Sturm decided to change. He slowly returned to doing sports and activities that he had always enjoyed, like weightlifting and running.
In 2011, a friend sent Sturm an intense exercise program called CrossFit. “And I looked at all the things these people were doing and I was like, there is no way I can do this.. But as he often does, Sturm decided to push himself. Within one day he was “hooked”. Still,it took months for Sturm to learn how to do the difficult exercises with his prosthesis. Just one year after he first tried CrossFit, he became a full-time CrossFit coach, starting to train people known as “adaptive athletes”, just like him.
CrossFit is not the only sport Sturm has learned since his accident. He also learned how to bobsled (滑 雪橇).Just as he did with CrossFit,Sturm took to bobsledding quickly. He even traveled to Europe in early 2015 for his first-ever bobsled races as a member of U.S. para-bobsled team. In two races, Sturm placed second and then first. Those results made him the para-bobsled World Champion. Again, Sturm hopes to grow the sport among adaptive athletes.
Sturm’s goal for bobsledding is similar to his goal with nearly everything he does in his life. “Being able to get up in the morning and make a difference to people’s lives is what I live for.” Sturm says.
