“All right, are you ready? Action!” I was standing inside the empty school. In my slightly shaking hand, I held a script(剧本) named On Patrol.
This was not a Hollywood hit. I didn’t have a producer or even an assistant. The only thing I had was my camera, but it was enough to get my dream to come true.
From as far back as my preschool years, movies had been my life. I often heard my mom say, “Nathan, you need to stop watching videos and go outside to play.” When my high school began, choosing a career was slowly drawing near. After months of not knowing of what I would do in my life, an idea appeared: Why not make directing movies my career? So I wrote my first short film On Patrol, a 30-minute video about a hall monitor(监视器) attempting to stop students leaving litter.
I made the film in my school at weekends. The hallways were dimly(模糊) lit, creating a cold atmosphere, which was perfect for my movie. The filming process was anything but perfect. The lighting never matched; my cheap camera battery kept dying, which forced me to record on an iPhone. In spite of the tiring production, I was learning to work with my actors and listen to their ideas, and I was learning to tell a story like a professional filmmaker. When filming was finished, it took me another week to edit it.
On Patrol was not a masterpiece, but it was my stepping-stone. Looking back on it not only gives me a laugh but also gives me a motivation to continue pursuing(追逐) what I love. I’m no longer a silly kid with a love for movies; I’m a real director now.
