资源简介

The number of people in the US. without a home is down from one year ago. The total is nearly 550000, about 3% lower than last year. The number comes from the Department of Housing and Urban Development. The information comes after a report from the United Nations that homelessness is “spreading” worldwide. The report asked governments around the world to terminate homelessness by 2030 so that no one would have to live on the streets.

The UN last did a study on the worlds homeless population 11 years ago. At that time, it estimated(估计) the total at 100 million. But the UN said the number is likely much higher today. It estimates that 100 million children alone are now without a home.

Recently, in the city of Mosul, Iraq, the US. Department of Housing and Urban Development measured(统计) homelessness on a single night. In January, thousands of volunteers spread out across the country. They counted a total of 549922 homeless people. That is down 14% from six years ago. Still, the government reported increased homelessness in the cities of Los Angeles, Dallas, Seattle and Washington, DC. Officials thought higher housing prices are responsible for the increase.

Leilani Farha, the top UN official on housing, said homelessness is an issue of lifeanddeath importance. The death rate(死亡率)among homeless people is two to ten times higher than that among the people who are not homeless,” she said.

In the Kenyan capital of Nairobi, 250000 people do not have a place to stay. Many of them are children, and live on the streets. In India, the homeless population is estimated at 78 million. Eleven million of that number are street children. Indonesia’s homeless population is 3 million, including 28000 in the capital, Jakarta. In Nigeria, the homeless population is estimated at 24 million.

1Which of the following can replace the underlined word “terminate” in Paragraph 1?

AShow.             BReplace.

CEnd.                      DProtect.

C 解析:词义猜测题。根据划线单词后面的so that no one would have to live on the streets可知,联合国号召各国政府在2030年之前结束无家可归这一问题。

2What did UN find about homelessness around the world?

AIt is more serious than 11 years ago.

BThose who are homeless are mainly elders.

3What do Leilani Farhas words in Paragraph 4 suggest?

AHomelessness hasnt drawn enough attention.

BThe number of homeless people increases fast.

CHomeless people are usually those who are sick.

DThe problem of homelessness must be solved quickly.

4What may be UNs attitude to homelessness?

AImpatient.                BRelaxed.

CSurprised.                DWorried.

D 解析:观点态度题。通读文章可知,联合国报告表明全世界无家可归的人数上升了不少,再结合联合国建议各国政府尽快解决这一问题和文中的联合国官员对待这一问题的态度可以推知,无家可归的问题令人担忧。

N-US>term effect.

D 解析:推理判断题。从第一段中的which may be gained right back as soon as one returns to a normal diet和第二段中的or whole grains may last longer以及第四段中的will generally just be gained right back after normal food is eaten again可知,作者认为通过禁食减肥的方法只能在短时间内有效。
