It is a hot topic about whether to set up National Reading Day. According to the table, only 5 percent of educated Chinese said they read regularly, much lower than 15% in 1999, and those readers only read 11.7 books per person then. However, the number fell to 4.5 in 2008.
Actually, many factors are responsible for the falling number of readers in China. Firstly, the books are the ladder of human progress, but the Chinese seem to have forgotten it. Secondly, when it comes to school education, although the importance of quality-oriented education has been stressed for years, college entrance examinations are all students care about, and few have any interest in reading.
